Inspiration comes from watching others and enhancing your own ideas. One of my very many hobbies is to travel and I thought why not use this as an inspiration. The two countries that inspire me the most with the culture and exciting adventure are Los Angeles, California and India.
Firstly Los Angeles, California is where I want to be based. I would like to eventually move there in a few years. Especially the whole hustle and bustle with the numerous beaches, sun and the beautiful scenery. USA is a place I have always wanted to be and to move there with dance would be my dream.
Secondly- India is the country my grandparents were born and raised. As I have a western life and my parents are western, going back to my routes is very interesting and educating for me. The Indian life is very different to mine and the cities are very busy having the whole hustle and bustle there too.
Therefore, I found some photos of the Sunset Strip and Bombay/Mumbai and thought there were very appropriate to the creative side of dance. They contain different people, colours, lights all sorts. Take a look and see if it gives you any inspiration about looking at your favourite place.
I love this pictures and it's really interesting to hear you talk about where your roots lie and where you see yourself in the future. I think the pictures would make a great stimulus for a choreography piece - I would love to see some kind of a fusion of dance styles that incorporated both these worlds. I recently came across this piece of music that fuses English Folk with Indian, which I love, it's so original and creative - I thought you might find it interesting so I will put the link to you tube below.

Sonal this is a great post, having never been to India myself it is just so interesting to see photos of what it is really like. Like Stephanie said, it is also nice to see where your home roots lie. What stood out to me was all the wonderful bright colours of their attire, you could use this and create a way of turning this into a fantatic new piece of choreography perhaps?
ReplyDeleteI have lived in India and it’s one of my favourite places on earth. They are both so rich in colour and so chaotic. One of the things I love most is India has organisation within its chaos. This will be a great starting point for choreography. It’s actually really lifted my day taking me back to my time there.
ReplyDeleteWhen in India it was interesting to learn that most dancing is street dance or commercial dancing, when met with traditional Indian dance I struggled. It goes against everything I know as a dancer and for this reason I found it extremely difficult. Every hand gesture having a different meaning and being so similar. I have a lot of admiration for this type of dance its extremely difficult to master. To combine traditional Indian dance and commercial would be just brilliant in finding new choreography.
